Parque Pulmón Verde
La Trinidad, Moravia, Costa Rica. 2019
Overview
Parque Pulmón Verde occupies a challenging site in La Trinidad de Moravia, with steep topography to the south, views toward the urban center of Coronado, a windy climate and a single access point to the northeast. The program emerged from participatory workshops and serves a regional scale. It includes a botanical garden, a plant nursery, a classroom building, an amphitheater, a plaza, trails, family shelters, a play area, a dog park and parking. The Centro de Desarrollo Humano Pulmón Verde, the civic core of the complex, sits at the center of the site.
The trails tie the whole park together with ramps and gentle slopes that ensure a continuous surface for everyone. Their zigzag layout offers scents and colors along the way and makes the difficult topography walkable. The bamboo family shelters with lightweight roofs connect directly to the children’s play area and form a family zone oriented toward the views.
Lighting extends the park into the night. Low grazing fixtures define the trails, solar powered posts mark specific areas and the light from the central building activates the surrounding spaces. A site that climate and slope made hard to use becomes green infrastructure for all ages.
