Estación del Ferrocarril en Turrialba, restoration
Turrialba, Turrialba, Costa Rica. 2023
Overview
The former Atlantic Railway Station in Turrialba is one of the first buildings that, together with the rail line, shaped the urban fabric of the city. The intervention brings it back into the active life of the town center through the Feria Natural Project, part of the Turrialba Sostenible initiative, which seeks to energize the local economy as the railway once did.
The program includes an exhibition hall, a café and a shop open to the public for selling handcrafted and organic products from local associations. It is completed by offices, a study room and a meeting room that make the building the operating base of the project. The intervention restores deteriorated elements and rebuilds those that defined the original building. Timber is the predominant material, treated and painted in its original color. Outside, floor lamps light the gardens and the facade and give the building a presence at night.
The building that accompanied the birth of Turrialba is once again driving the economic and social development of its center.
