Overview

Barrio Escalante has a culinary identity built through precise decisions. Paseo La Luz grows out of a comprehensive urban vision with nine micro plazas along Calle 33. They are sidewalk widenings that the Municipality of San José could fund, designed so restaurants could bring their tables out to the street and activate public space. The intervention is minimal in geometry and high in impact. Those nine micro plazas drove a significant transformation in San José.

The lighting refers to the history of the place. Pulpería La Luz gives its name to the start of the promenade and recalls a real fact. San José was one of the first cities in Latin America to be lit with electricity. The light fixtures recall that history and extend the use of the space into the night.

The promenade works as a public private project, born from citizen participation and the identity of the neighborhood. Today it is one of the busiest urban spaces in San José. Restaurants multiplied, housing densified the surroundings and Calle 33, now Paseo La Luz, became a culinary, cultural and urban reference for the country.
