Paseo Peatonal Las Mercedes

Tirrases, Curridabat, Costa Rica. 2014

Overview

Paseo Peatonal Las Mercedes formalizes a 120 meter route that the people of Tirrases already used every day. The axis joins two neighborhoods, Quince de Agosto to the west (with its dense wooded area) and Kira de Castillo to the east (with services and public transport). It borders the senior center to the north and, to the south, the CDH de Tirrases, the school and the police station. That accumulation of uses turns the promenade into an urban node that resolves a stretch and connects a territory.

The program responds to that condition with a sidewalk, an amphitheater, seating areas and a threshold. The gentle slope to the north is used to give the surface continuity without breaks or barriers, at the right scale for the daily movement of children, young people and older adults.

Lighting carries its own weight in this project. In Tirrases, a well lit promenade is public safety infrastructure and allows the public space to be used at night as well.
