Centro de Desarrollo Humano de Tirrases “La Cometa”
Tirrases, Curridabat, Costa Rica. 2018
Overview
The Centro de Desarrollo Humano de Tirrases was the first of its kind in Costa Rica and gave its name to a concept later replicated across the country. Its concrete volume acts as a landmark on arrival and marks the center of the district. The three story building sits between the La Cometa building and the Las Mercedes pedestrian promenade as a new place for meeting and social interaction.
The interior is organized around a central zone with abundant daylight and courtyards that blend with the areas of use. Moving through it, the building offers multiple perspectives that reveal different relationships between inside and outside. Open facades ensure natural cross ventilation on every level. A broad stair that works as a small amphitheater completes the program of meeting spaces.
The complex ties together the public space of Tirrases along a key stretch of the district, with high quality, low maintenance materials.
