Cancha La Flor

Santiago, Paraíso, Costa Rica. 2015

Overview

La Flor is a compact rural village in the mountainous area of Paraíso, reached from Santiago or by a turnoff on the road to Cervantes. The project intervenes the existing field with a strip of uses along one of its sides that transforms the space without altering its community scale.

The strip includes a sidewalk, a cantilevered micro plaza at one end and a play area linked to the school at the other. Beneath the micro plaza a basketball court is created and at the center a grandstand sits over the locker rooms. The whole program is resolved in a single linear gesture that takes advantage of the slope of the terrain and multiplies the uses of the sports space.

Cancha La Flor becomes the new civic center of the community. It is a flexible, accessible space connected to its surroundings, for sports, recreation and social activities at the heart of the village.
