Street name sign
cornerfachadaneighborhoodroad
A system and sign that identifies each street and each house so they can be found.
What it solves
It allows the mail, the ambulance or a visitor to reach a door. Where there are no names people find their way by landmarks.
Today
Put the name or number of the street on every corner in lettering legible by day and night. Number houses continuously. In Costa Rica it helps to add the street, the avenue and an exact location to the landmark.
Common mistake
Giving directions that depend on a place that no longer exists or that only neighbors know.
Tomorrow
Street names chosen with neighbors can recall the rivers, trees and people of the neighborhood. Alongside landmark-based directions, coordinates and open location codes help an ambulance find the door.
Fact In San José streets and avenues are numbered starting from Avenida 0 and Calle 0.
Where it comes from
- 1Enlightenment Europe Austrian Empire and Paris, 1770 and 1805
Maria Theresa ordered houses to be numbered for conscription, and in 1805 Paris adopted even and odd numbers on each side of the street. - 2Japan Japanese cities, present day
Addresses are given by district and block and rarely use the street name, except in Kyoto. - 3Costa Rica the whole country, present day
Addresses are given from a landmark and in meters toward the cardinal points, although San José has numbered streets and avenues.
