Battery
housingretailhealth centerschooloff-grid farm
Equipment that stores electricity produced by solar panels or taken from the grid for later use. In homes and buildings it is usually lithium and works together with an inverter.
Solves
What it solves
It allows the day’s solar energy to be used at night and keeps basic lights and equipment on when the power goes out, something valuable in storm season.
Today
Install it in a ventilated, dry and shaded place, away from bedrooms and combustible materials, with space for maintenance. Size its capacity according to the loads that truly must stay on.
Common mistake
Placing it in a hot, closed room or in full sun, which shortens its life and increases the risk.
Tomorrow
The electric car itself will be able to back up the home during a blackout. A community hall with panels and batteries can be the place where the neighborhood charges phones and keeps medicines cold after a storm.
Fact Lead-acid batteries are almost fully recycled, while lithium ones are still hard to recycle.
Where it comes from
- 1Experimental physics France, 1859
The lead-acid battery was invented, the first rechargeable battery in history. - 2Electric mobility several countries, 21st century
Batteries retired from electric cars are reused in homes, where they still work well for years.
