SINEM, Parque La Libertad

Patarrá, Desamparados, Costa Rica. 2009

Overview

SINEM Desamparados and the Escuela Cirsense are part of Parque La Libertad, a cultural complex set in a former concrete plant. The proposal reuses the abandoned structure, keeps the memory of the place and folds it into a program of culture, environment and entrepreneurship organized in four color sectors (purple, orange, yellow and green).

The two buildings are organized by two circulation axes, one longitudinal and one transverse. The transverse axis marks the main route. It starts at the entrance, joins the SINEM with the Escuela Cirsense and ends at the auditorium, where two reflecting pools frame the outdoor space. At the intersection, the lobby and the individual boxes seem to float and are reflected in the water. Vertical circulation consists of ramps with purple railings that organize classrooms and offices around the perimeter.

The existing structure drives the decisions of the project. The roof openings are kept to bring natural light into the central double height space. Permeable facades create cross ventilation and the lightweight panels of classrooms and halls allow changes over time. In front, an esplanade for concerts can be enjoyed from the plazas of the complex and from the second level walkway. At the back of the auditorium, the seating ends with a view of the existing trees.
