Congresos Líneas

Between 2003 and 2010 Luis Diego Barahona and the LDB Arquitectura team organized seven international architecture congresses in San José, at the headquarters of the Colegio Federado de Ingenieros y de Arquitectos de Costa Rica (CFIA), the professional association of engineers and architects. Each edition had a theme, five lectures in one day and a round table open to the public.

The congresses were born alongside the Líneas publishing house, which published monographs on Latin American architects. Several books were launched during the congresses. See the books

La seducción de la forma (The seduction of form)

January 25, 2003

Poster for the 1st Congreso Líneas, La seducción de la forma (The seduction of form)

It opened the series with an uncomfortable question taken from Neil Leach, whether meaningful discourse always loses out to seduction. At the round table Víctor Cañas argued that architecture is more about space, light, color and texture than form, and Jaime Rouillón and Carlos Jiménez discussed how quickly we consume images today. Before the lectures, the Colección Líneas issue devoted to Isaac Broid was presented.

Light as the material of the project. Alejandro Aravena came at it from the opposite side and spoke about shadow, about looking for the most irreducible trait of each commission and about architecture answering questions that matter to society as a whole. The round table revolved around a phrase by Mies van der Rohe on the qualities proper to each material.
